The Your Canadian Food Story book is about connecting us to our food, to each other while eating food. It’s a call to the table to pause and enjoy the food and make memories. It’s an opportunity to learn about our food stories and share them to ultimately nourish and grow our health.

This book evolved from my program Your Food Story, which is part of a larger mission to emphasize the importance of food stories and their whole health benefits. Your Food Story asks: Why do you eat, what, when, where, how and with whom? Where do you feel nourished? Does the food you eat affect your vitality? When do you feel satisfied with what you eat? Do you prefer eating with a group of people or alone? Etc. In other words, it’s not just what we eat that gives us nourishment.

The book project idea was “born” in the shower no less, at the beginning of 2017. At first, I thought it could be a way to salute Canada’s 150th birthday. But soon steered away from that since firstly, Canada is much older than confederation and I didn’t want to make it appear I was a part of the project tied to the Canada 150 recognition.

It was quite the process to curate the stories. What began as a reach to multiple circles and communities I belonged to became a quest for specific connections to parts of Canada that I didn’t have. I did some “cold calling” and to my delight, the response was positive. I just knew I was watching a movement grow.

After 11 months of pursuing, interviewing, and writing I collected 113 stories with 110 accompanying recipes.

Your Canadian Food Story takes you on a powerful journey to explore your food memories. Meet over 110 Canadians who share cherished stories and recipes that invite you to partake. This book encourages you to honour regional food, gather together, get creative in the kitchen, spark conversation at the table, and truly enjoy what you eat. Your Canadian Food Story will ultimately move you to discover, develop, and express your own unique food story.

What’s your food story?

“Loretta Friedrich brings Canadians together around one big table to share stories, memories, and favourite recipes from bannock to smoothies to Caldo Verde. A nourishing sense of home and hearth permeates these pages, where, with gentle guidance, Friedrich encourages us to discover and celebrate our own food stories. A book to be savoured, in the kitchen or in a favourite armchair.”

– Michele Genest, author of The Boreal Gourmet and The Boreal Feast

“Through heartfelt stories and mouthwatering recipes, Friedrich takes us on an intimate journey across Canada in order to remind us of the importance food plays in shaping our identities. Your Canadian Food Story is the conversation we ought to be having about food and a great reminder of what nourishment truly means.”

– Myriam Porrazzo, founder of Mumspiration Food

“Your Canadian Food Story is both a joy to read and an invaluable document. Not only does it capture the specific food stories of those living in Canada, but it also points out the universality of food and the experiences surrounding it. These stories (and the “Table Talk” questions accompanying them) beautifully highlight the resilience of Canadians when it comes to food, as well as the joy it imparts through so much more than just flavour.”

– Lindsay Anderson & Dana VanVeller, authors of FEAST: Recipes & Stories from a Canadian Road Trip

“I highly recommend Your Canadian Food Story, a delicious compilation of recipes, memories, and love that brings consciousness to the most basic of our daily rituals and inspires us to cherish our own food stories.”

– Wendy Gibson, Executive Director, The Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners

“There is nothing more important to eating than knowing where your food comes from and cooking with love. Your Canadian Food Story is a reflection of how food brings joy to our lives, culture can allow us to celebrate our identity, and tradition reminds us of our sweet past.”

– Sylvia Cloutier, Producer

“Your Canadian Food Story is the best book to come along in years, as its stories and recipes bring us back to food as our friend, our comfort, our culture. Every theme will have readers telling their food anecdotes. This is a book that celebrates food!”

– Barb Rees, author of RV Canada books
